Isopropyl alcohol is a mild organic solvent, it can be used as an antiseptic liquid and for cleaning surfaces, it has degreasing and disinfecting properties.
Application and Properties:
Isopropyl alcohol is used in dentistry during root canal treatment.
- Used alternately with sodium hypochlorite, it lowers the surface tension, thus increasing the hypochlorite penetration capacity – sodium hypochlorite can then penetrate into smaller diameter channels.
- Accelerates the drainage of the canal.
- Supports rinsing out temporary root canal fillings containing iodoform.
Directions for use:
- As a rinse aid
Isopropyl alcohol should be administered to the canal alternately with sodium hypochlorite by means of a syringe with an endodontic needle.
- To dry the canal
After careful preparation of the canal, use isopropyl alcohol as the last measure, applying it with a syringe with an endodontic needle, and then dry with paper points – the canal can be considered dry when the last stud inserted along its entire working length and left for a few seconds is dry.
- Removal of iodoform dressing
Isopropyl alcohol should be administered into the canal by applying a syringe with an endodontic needle, after several rinsing, the dressing condenses and becomes easy to remove, the treatment should be completed by drying the canal with paper points.
